MARDI GRAS (Fat Tuesday)

March 4th this year.

Mardi Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday", is the last celebration before the solemn Christian season of Lent. This is a lunar based holiday which means the day it is celebrated chanes each year because it is based on cycles of the moon. 

PURIM (Festival of Lots)

March 13th - 14th this year

Purim is a very festive Jewish holiday that celebrates the Old Testament hero, Esther's success in saving the Jews from demise. Holi marks the beginning of Spring. 

HOLI (Hindu Festival of Colors)

March 14th this year

Holi marks the beginning of Spring. It is a cultural & religious holiday celebrated by most Idians & Hindus. The date it is celebrated varies each year based upon the Hindu calendar's month of Phalguna 

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY (Irish Cultural Awareness Day)

March 17th each year

Social-Emotional Development

Social & emotional development, especially in early childhood, provides a critically important foundation for children in developing & learning throughout their lives.  
     Social development refers to the ability to initiate, create, foster, & sustain meaningful relationships with adults & peers.
     Emotional development refers to the ability to express, recognize, interpret, & manage one's emotions & the ability to respond appropriately to others' emotions.

Executive Functioning for Families

Executive Functioning (EF) is basically the brain's management system.  EF is a set of mental skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control that are used daily to learn, work, and manage daily life.

Trouble with executive function can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions, among other things.

Explore the Experiences of Muslim Youth Growing Up in Dearborn, Michigan:

      - Complete the "K" section of the chart listing what your child thinks s/he already knows about being Muslim 

      - Complete the "W" section of the chart listing 3-4 things that your child would like to know about being Muslim

  • During the movie, prompt your child to think about what s/he is learning about some of the experiences the youth in the movie have - especially during the Muslim Holy Month of "Ramadan"

      - Complete the "L" portion of the chart for what your child learns about some experiences of Muslim life

  • After the movie, discuss the movie events, characteristics of the featured students/families, your child's thoughts

      - Complete the "S" portion of the chart for what you child still wants to know or learn about being Muslim

      - Use the internet or library to see if you can help your child find the answers that have been listed in the "S" portion of               the KWLS chart

For added fun, help your child to create a short presentation about your child or family's holy days or celebrations.
