APRIL FOOLS' DAY

Celebrated April 1st every year. This holiday is basically a local holiday celebrated by some people in the USA.

PASSOVER (PESACH)

Passover starts on April 13th this year & ends on April 20th. This Jewish holiday is celebrated each year in March or April.  The date of the holiday varies based upon the moon as this is a lunar holiday.  This is the holiday when Jews remember their deliverance from slavery.

EASTER

Easter week begins on April 13th this year with Palm Sunday and ends on April 21st which is Easter Monday.  Christians all over the world celebrate Easter each year in Spring.  The date Easter varies based upon the moon as this is a lunar holiday. Different Christian groups celebrate Easter on different dates. This is the holiday when Christians celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

EARTH DAY (Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose, Reduce)

Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22nd. It is a time when people all over the world think of ways to reuse, recycle, repurpose, and reduce waste.  What new habits will you develop to help save our planet?

The visual arts are important for exploring creative expression as well as developing hand-eye coordination, dexterity, tenacity, & executive functioning skills

It is never too early to start talking about your child's interests, strengths, curiosity, & options for the future

~Executive Functioning~

Executive Functioning (EF) is basically the brain's management system.  EF is a set of mental skills including working memory, flexible thinking, and self-control that are used daily to learn, work, and manage daily life.

Trouble with executive function can make it hard to focus, follow directions, and handle emotions, among other things.

~Social-Emotional Tips~

Social & emotional development, especially in early childhood, provides a critically important foundation for children in developing & learning throughout their lives.  
     Social development refers to the ability to initiate, create, foster, & sustain meaningful relationships with adults & peers.
     Emotional development refers to the ability to express, recognize, interpret, & manage one's emotions & the ability to respond appropriately to others' emotions.

Have You Ever Heard of a "lucky charm"?

Cars and music?!  Motown is the nickname of the city of Detroit, Michigan which is considered the "Motor capitol" of the world as it is credited as being the home of the three major auto industrial giants: Ford Motor Company, Chrysler, and GMC. 

Your challenge for the month is to explore Motown Music!

  • Visit the links below to learn more about the origins of Motown & its many famous black artists Access more information using the links below.  
  • List to the "Motown for Kids" music compilation
  • Discuss how the music makes your child feel. Is there an emotional response?
  • Watch some of the "live" performances of different Motown legends (including Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson who were children when their musical careers started!
  • Visit the Motown Museum virtually

For added fun, if you live in Michigan or are considering visiting the Detroit area, consider planning a tour of the Motown Museum in its original location & the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn where you can see memorabilia and learn more about how the Motown music movement helped shape America.

~ Family Movie Night ~

Black History Exploration:

View the list of "25 Best Black History Movies for Kids."  Use the synopsis, suggested age appropriateness and your child's input to select a movie to watch as a family.

      - Complete the "K" section of the chart listing what your child thinks s/he already knows about the person.

      - Complete the "W" section of the chart listing 3-4 things that your child would like to know about the person.

  • During the movie, prompt your child can think about what is learned about the person

      - Complete the "L" portion of the chart for what your child learns about the person through the movie

  • After the movie, discuss the events in the movie, characteristics of the featured person, your child's impressions

      - Complete the "S" portion of the chart for what you child still wants to know or learn about the person

      - Use the internet or library to see if you can help your child find the answers that have been listed in the "S" portion of               the KWLS chart

For added fun, use one of the templates below or your child's own design to create a short presentation about the featured person using details from the movie, your child's own research, etc.
