Recommended Reading for September

Reading together & incorporating literacy into your daily life & routines is important for bonding, developing language, expanding vocabulary & fostering empathy

This new edition of Barron's First Thesaurus includes updated entries and fresh, new computer-animation style graphics. It's still the perfect way to help kids develop a love of language.

Engaging entries include definitions, descriptive illustrations, and example sentences to instruct youngsters on hundreds of different words that share the same meaning.

They'll learn that slim, lean, and slender are different ways of saying thin, or that drawings, photos, cartoons, and portraits are all types of pictures.

Entries may also include related words and antomyms, giving kids even more reference for expanding vocabulary and enhancing writing projects.

A color-coded thumb index along the side of each page and a traditional index at the back of the book make it quick and easy to find words.

Full-color illustrations throughout.

Family Movie Night Suggestion

A Turtle's Tale: Sammy's Adventures (2010)

This is an animated movie about a sea turtle (Sammy) that hatched in 1959 & spends the next fifty years travelling the world, while it is being changed by global warming.  For added enrichment, consider comparing & contrasting how the Mars Rover & Sammy the Sea Turtle's experiences might be the same (compare) & how they might be different (contrast).  The oceans & seas are often compared to space exploration. Why might that be?
